“Opportunity dances with those who are already on the dance floor.” Jackson Browne
This quote for me is really resonating at the moment. The quote indicates that you have to be living life (on the dance floor) for opportunities to be available to you. I liken this too if you are sitting on the couch eating bonbons and complaining life isn’t fair, too hard, and you never seem to get where you want to go, well, maybe there is a reason for it.
You see we can make statements of what we want and think about it all day long. Lots of people call this intending. It is an excellent thing as it focuses on what we would like to have in our life. But all the intending in the world won’t change where you sit unless you take some action. The action anchors it a potential possibility.
Some would say intentions are daydreaming. I quite enjoy dreaming of what I want out of life. Where I would like it to go. But if I only dream and take no action to move me forward these are just pleasant thoughts and a great way to relax and while the hours away.
Why are actions so important to anchor in our intentions, our dreams? My understanding is, action shows we are serious about making a change, moving in a direction. Actions also give us momentum as one step leads to another step and another step. Have you ever noticed when you start a project and you are excited about it how it seems to come together? Suddenly you are talking with people and doing things for the project and each step you take seems to lead right into another one. It almost takes on a life of its own. That is what dreaming/intending and anchoring them with action is all about.
So this is why the quote at the outset resonates with me. You see it reminds me that if I’m out there taking steps, dreaming/intending, then potential opportunities will find me. It doesn’t have to be hard if you are on the dance floor half the work is done … step 1,2 step 3,4.
