From Shadows to Self-Discovery: A Guide to Finding Your Authentic Voice

We all know that feeling—looking in the mirror and barely recognizing the person staring back at us. Not physically, but deeper than that. Somewhere along the way, between the never-ending household responsibilities, career ladder climbing, relationships, judgements, and endless to-do lists, we lost touch with who we really are. I’ve been there, and I want to share with you what I’ve learned about finding your way back home to yourself.

The Quiet Disappearing Act

It happens gradually, almost imperceptibly. One day you’re a vibrant soul with dreams and desires, and the next you’re someone who automatically responds “I’m fine with whatever everyone else wants” when asked about your preferences. You become an expert at meeting others’ needs while yours gather dust in the corner of your heart.
This isn’t about being selfless or kind—it’s about slowly erasing yourself from your own life’s narrative.

The Wake-Up Call
For me, my wake-up call came some years ago, when a long-term toxic relationship ended abruptly. I couldn’t breathe and I had no idea who I was, because over the years I had hid myself away and morphed into the person I thought others wanted me to be. I had no idea how to move forward at that time, however I leaned on something that I had heard inside for years “Isn’t there more to life than this?”, and “I am meant for more.” That’s when a spark started – the spark I needed to remember who I was, and to go on the journey of reclaiming the true me, my authentic self.

The Journey Back
Rediscovering yourself isn’t a straight path. It’s more like following breadcrumbs through a forest, each one leading you closer to home. Here’s what I’ve learned along the way:
Start With Silence Followed by Journaling
In our noise-filled world, silence feels uncomfortable. But it’s in these quiet moments that your authentic voice begins to whisper. Start with just five minutes a day of sitting with yourself. No phone, no TV, no distractions. Just you and your thoughts. What comes up might surprise you. I recommend journaling on the heels of this, so you can capture the thoughts that came through. What I find is, it allows these thoughts to expand and grow. It also invites in more thoughts because now I can see other possibilities.

Question Your “Shoulds”
Every time you think “I should do this” or “I should be that”, pause and ask yourself: “Says who?” Often, these “shoulds” are inherited beliefs that don’t align with your true values. Challenge them gently but persistently. We have enough people” shoulding” on us from the outside. We really have to stop doing it to ourselves. When we stop this, we can be more kind and gracious with ourselves.

Practice Small Moments of Authenticity
You don’t have to make dramatic changes overnight. Start small. Order what you truly want at restaurants instead of what you think you should have. Share an honest opinion in a meeting, even if it differs from the consensus. Each authentic choice, no matter how small, strengthens your connection to yourself. These small steps exponentiate on top of each other, and before you know it you will have taken a large step. It is also key when you are taking these steps to surround yourself with people who support you instead of having a lot of neigh-sayers commenting on your steps and giving you advice you didn’t ask for.

Embrace the Space Outside Your Comfort Zone (and “Theirs”…)
Here’s the truth—reclaiming yourself will make some people uncomfortable. They’re used to your old patterns, your perpetual yes’s, your hiding of your true self. Their discomfort is not your responsibility to fix. Your responsibility is to your own truth.

The Ongoing Practice
Self-discovery isn’t a destination—it’s a practice, a journey. Even now, years into my journey, I still catch myself slipping into old patterns. The difference is that now I recognize it sooner, redirect more gently, and return to myself more easily.

Remember, your authentic self isn’t lost—she’s waiting. She’s in the dreams you’re afraid to voice, in the opinions you hesitate to share, in the desires you’ve learned to ignore. She’s patient, persistent, and ready whenever you are to step back into the light.
Your journey back to yourself might look different from mine, and that’s exactly as it should be. We’re not here to become copies of each other, but to uncover and celebrate our unique truths. Start today. Start small. But most importantly, start.
Because the world needs more women who are fully, unapologetically themselves. And that includes you.
